Welcome everyone to this week’s Wichita Weekly Update where I give you a rundown of the recent local news, some fun facts about Wichita and upcoming events over the next week. Today is Monday, August 10th.
WICHITA NEWS
First up, let’s go over some news from the last week:
Historic Designation for Century II, Former Downtown Library
Save Century II has been trying to do just that, save Century II. The group presented a petition of 17000 signatures to the city hall in July. A big push was to have the building designated as historically important, but the city of Wichita is pushing back and filed a petition in district court to challenge the validity of the previous petition. I will update with more information as it becomes available.

New AgEagle manufacturing facility in Wichita
A drone company called AgEagle SAerial Systems is planning to lease a 12000 square-foot space at the Golf Warehouse off of K-96 and Webb. They are relocating from Neodesha.
Textron Company Bell Helicopter to open new facility in Wichita
Bell Helicopter, a division of Textron has opened a new facility in Wichita.

Wichita State Students Move into Dorms
Wichita State students have started to move into the dorms. Using social distancing for check in, only 10 students can move into each dorm building at any time.
Wichita Police Department makes more protest arrests
Four additional people were arrested for requested charges ranging from unlawful assembly to rioting and criminal damage to property. For more information, see the link attached to the show notes.

Whataburger coming to Kansas!
Whataburger has announced that several Whataburger locations opening up in Kansas, which could be in part due to the request from Superbowl MVP Patrick Mahomes. But it has been yet to determined if Wichita will get one.

About the Keeper of the Plains! Did you know that at 44 feet tall, The Keeper of the Plains is the 25th tallest statue in the U.S. For reference, some of the statues that are bigger include Paul Bunyan and Babe the Blue Ox, Christ of the Ozarks, and the Statue of Liberty.

Starlite Drive-In
During August, Starlite is offering their carload pricing. Early in the week they will be showing Inside out and Star wars and on the other screen Back to the Future and The Mummy.
Bert Kreisher
Tomorrow/Tuesday night is the last night for Comedian Bert Kreischer’s Hot Summer Night’s Drive-In Tour is happening Tuesday at the Starlite Drive-in.
REI Wichita New Store Opening
Outdoor lovers will be happy. REI is opening their new store in Wichita in Greenwich Place (near k-96).
