đŸŒŸ Quietest Place to Sleep

TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Wichita!

Spring weather is here this week. That makes me want to get out and explore Wichita. There is no better place to do that than Tanganyika and we just so happen to be giving away 2 season passes over on Instagram. Not on IG? Just reply to this email with your favorite animal for an entry.

Let's get to it!

- Landon Huslig

p.s. Happy 60th birthday to my old man, Papa Vaughn!

NEWS

Quietest Place to Sleep

Wichita is on a lot of lists.

Cheapest to live. Worst for dating. Etc.

Here is a new one for ya:

#14 Quiest Place to sleep in the country = Sedgwick County

Together with Sur La Table

Some people say there is nothing to do in Wichita.

They clearly haven’t heard about the cooking classes at Sur La Table.

A few weeks back, we spent a couple hours at the Bradley Fair location to try our hand at Chinese Takeout and haven’t stopped recommending it to friends since.

You just show up and everything is there and ready for you to go to school with your professional cooking instructor.

You cut, you slice, you sauté, you do it all.

Or none of it, if that’s more of your style. That’s the best part, you can be as involved or not involved as you want.

You can choose from a plethora of options such as: French Bistro Favorites, Date Night: Dinner in Tuscany, Perfecting French Pastries, Date Night: Evening in Paris, Citrus Lovers’ Macarons, and so many more.

10/10 couldn’t recommend the cooking classes at Sur La Table more.

Check out a full list of classes here and sign up today!

Wichita Life Spotlight

We put out a form for you to recommend people doing special things in our community, so let’s keep it rolling!

Today we are recognizing Alex Etter of The Wash House:

“Alex is an AMCA certified Clinical Trichologist who has just opened The Wash House: A Headspa and Trichology Parlor, after 15 years in the cosmetology industry. Trichology focuses on the science of hair and scalp health and the treatment of hair loss and related disorders.

The Wash House offers a way to improve the health of your hair and scalp as well as providing deeply relaxing and rejuvenating headspa experiences. Alex is awesome because of the journey she's been on to shift her focus more in the direction of personal well-being.

This new chapter has aligned so perfectly with her deeply analytical and science-driven mindset while building on the hard earned skills and experience she's built so far in her career.”

LOCAL BUSINESS

Opening

Popcorner Franchise

You might not know this, but my parents helped bring popcorn to Andover / Wichita in the form of Vic’s Popcorn then Andover Popcorn Company.

They sold over 10 years ago to the current owners who are absolutely crushing it (and also worked at the original store) with the Popcorner.

Now Kirsten and the crew are franchising out their name, recipes, etc and I can’t wait to see The Popcorner all over the nation. Congrats!

Belly Dancing

I know basically 0 about belly dancing, but I do know that 50 years of any type of business is incredible.

Congrats to Amira Dance on their 50th anniversary!

Oldest Bookstore in Wichita

You never know what you’ll find if you drive around Wichita.

EB found the oldest book store in town.

It is wild that I, as well as many others apparently, have never heard of it.

What other businesses like this have we probably not heard of?

CIVIL

Wichita School Vote

There is a vote tomorrow (2/25) in-person.

  • Here is a breakdown of how the “zero tax increase” bond issue will affect your property taxes

  • It is called a zero tax increase or zero rate-change because there is already a bond issue in place, so you will continue paying the same amount as you currently do

  • If you vote no, then your taxes would go down, but this has a direct impact on what the schools need to operate

Art Pedestals

Wichita Eagle

Back in 2023, the Sculpture WalkAbout program was ended due to a lack of funding after about 15 years of operation.

You might notice the 14 empty pedestals around Old Town.

These pedestals should soon be home to permanent sculptures.

Duck’s Flying Discs

The clubhouse on the former Clapp golf course will continue to be home to Duck’s Flying Discs after the Wichita City Council approved the new lease agreement.

LOCAL

Wichita Recovery Hub

The Wichita Recovery Coalition will host a groundbreaking event, the Wichita Recovery Housing Fair, set to take place at the Wichita Recovery Hub on March 11th, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM. This pivotal event is free for both recovery housing providers and individuals in recovery seeking housing.

Battle of the Bands

Do you love music? And supporting foster care in our state?

If so, get your tickets for the Battle of the Bands at Wave on 4/5.

HeritageFest

The first annual HeritageFest will be hosted on Saturday, May 17th.

It is inspired by the city’s rich railroad past and will hopefully be an annual spring tradition.

March Madness

Don’t forget - March Madness will hit downtown Wichita March 20th & 22nd.

There will be a ton of events coming up and we’ll be sure to share more as we get closer.
