What is Cowtown in Wichita, Kansas?
Old Cowtown Museum is literally a museum built to look like an old Cowtown, or even what Wichita could have looked like cerca 1870. There are several buildings that are built inside and out to to look like that time period. You can visit a furniture store with actual furniture owned by some of Wichita’s founders, or visit the general store or saloon for some refreshments!
This past weekend, my wife, baby girl and I decided to take a step into the past and visit Cowtown in Wichita. We went on a Sunday (which is currently free to enter! Typically it costs $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 for youth (12-17), $6 for Kids (5-11) and free for kids 4 and under.)
We were greeted at the door by a gentlemen who calmly and respectfully laid out the rules for wearing a mask due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. He handled it as well as anyone could and I wish all businesses handled it in this manner.
I have been to Cowtown for a couple events in the past like Tacofest, but never actually been to just walk around who watch the gun fight reenactments. We started out and checked out a couple of the inside of the buildings before heading over to the gunfight area. We sat down and waited for a few minutes before the show started. Near the beginning, the man running the show mentioned that they use real guns, albeit with blanks. This prompted me to realize we made a major mistake, we had a baby with us. I wheeled the stroller around the end of a building a few hundred feet away. It was loud enough to wake up our baby, but we decided we would check out a few more buildings before heading home for the day.
We highly recommend checking it out. There is a lot of history to learn about. Cowtown pays homage to the history of Wichita which was in fact, a Cowtown. Check it out today!
