Ever wonder what a day at Tanganyika looks like?
Let’s take a look at our latest adventure! (click here to see our day)
We live out east and it always seems like Tanganyika is soooo far away, but in reality it isn’t too far (and an easy drive straight down Kellogg).
It also makes it a bit easier to bring 3 young kids with the food options now available to order or grab-and-go, but we will get to that later.
We didn’t tell the kids where we were going, so when we arrived and they realized, the kids were pumped. There’s just something magical about getting up close and personal with animals you usually only see from afar.
🦒 First Stop: The Giraffes

After checking in, we made a beeline for the giraffe feeding station, one of the park’s most popular experiences (and one of the closest exhibits to the entrance).
I was shocked at how many giraffes were out there. I could see about a dozen and the zookeeper (I assume that is what they are called?) said there are 20+ if I recall correctly.
2 of our 3 kids fed the giraffes and thought it was hilarious with the long tongues reaching out to grab the food. One of the kids wasn’t feeling up for it, but that’s alright.
🦏 Next Up: Rhino Encounter

Feeding giraffes is one thing, our kids have done that before, although it is fun every time.
Feeding rhinos on the other hand is a completely different experience. Those big ole animals are unique and it’s pretty cool we have that experience right here in the Wichita area.
🍔 Time to Refuel at Luna’s Canteen

All that animal action worked up an appetite, so we made our way over to Luna’s Canteen. Their online ordering system made lunch a breeze. We placed our order from our phones and let the kids burn off some energy at the nearby playground while we waited.
In just a few minutes, our full lunch was hot, fresh, and ready to go. Chicken tenders, burgers, fruit cups, and even dairy-free options for our crew made it easy to keep everyone happy and full.
There are some solid options for adults, but it is paradise for the kids. They also offer grab-and-go snacks like pretzel bites, popcorn, and cookies that you can grab any time of day.

There are specific times for breakfast and lunch orders. Pro tip: if it is windy like it was when we went, or just about any day of the year in Kansas, head over near the Thirsty Sloth (the alcoholic beverage hut) and it can help block the wind.
🐒 Back to the Animals

After lunch, we weren’t done yet. We strolled through the park and made sure to catch a few more fan favorites:
- 🐵 The playful monkeys kept us entertained with their acrobatics. The babies were super cute and kept playing with each other
- 🦘 We literally hopped over to the kangaroo walkabout, where we got to walk right among them.
- 🐧 The penguins were a highlight as always, darting through the water and waddling around.
- 🐅 And of course, the tigers. We caught an educational talk where we learned about their habits, conservation, and even how they train with positive reinforcement.

We didn’t get to everything (kids can be tough y’know), but we will definitely be back. A few things we want to come back for:
- more time on the playground
- splashing around on the splash pad
- Holding the lemurs on lemur island
- and more!
There is more than enough to fill your afternoon or day, enough food options to keep you full, and so much more to do and learn.
