EVENTS

CORONAVIRUS

Many people preferred the Johnson & Johnson vaccine because it only required 1 dose rather than two.

Among other states and other Kansas counties, Sedgwick County paused the use of this vaccine this week. It is being recommended to pause the administration of this specific vaccine while they investigate the reports of potentially dangerous blood clots.

There have been 6 reports of rare, but potentially dangerous blood clots.

For reference, this is 6 cases out of 6.8 million doses where people had no or mild side effects.

Masks

There are currently no mask mandates in Kansas, Sedgwick County, or Wichita. Businesses still reserve the right to require you to wear a mask or they can refuse you service. Many businesses “encourage” mask wearing, but do not require it.

The Wichita YMCA’s are now among the businesses that will no long require you to wear a mask.

This doesn’t change a whole lot, as many people would wear them into the building, then take them off as they work out.

Wichita Wolves Esports

Wolves President & CEO Dylan Reese aka Scrimz with Mayor Brandon Whipple

The Wichita Wolves have been named the official Esports team of our city. Learn more about the newest team to represent Wichita.

Congrats to Dylan Reese and his organization! This is an awesome step in the direction of innovation for Wichita.

Transgender Ban

A Kansas bill was passed by the Legislature last week that bans transgender athletes from high school and college sports.

The NCAA has issued a statement saying it will pull it’s basketball tournaments from states that prohibit transgender athletes competing as females.

The trickle down effects of that transgender ban bill and the NCAA statement means that Wichita could miss out on hosting regional locations for the 2022 Women’s and 2025 Men’s March Madness.

According to Mayor Brandon Whipple and Visit Wichita, this would cost Wichita around $7.5 million.

TBT in Wichita

TBT aka The Basketball Tournament will return to Wichita as Charles Koch Arena was selected as a regional site once again. The last time this happened, Wichita had the best showing by a long shot compared to any other regional location.

Airbnb turns deadly

Most people have stayed in an airbnb at some point in their life. It’s just better than a hotel sometimes.

shooting occurred last week at an airbnb at 254 N Battin at 2:45AM.

This could cause Wichita to tighten regulations around airbnbs.

BUSINESS

Aircraft Biz

The aircraft industry is a very tough one. Especially with the 737 Max stuff going on the last couple years.

That being said, the U.S. Dept of Defense just awarded Textron Aviation with a $95.1 million dollar contract.

Wichita employees will do this work with a target end date of April 12, 2026.
