Good morning Wichita! I hope this 6AM email is a slightly less rude way of waking up than those earthquakes yesterday morning.
It seems like these emails are growing longer with important or relevant news and events. One way we could keep it short and sweet is to send it a little more frequently. Would you mind receiving these more often? 2 or 3x per week? Let us know please!
In today’s Wichita Weekly Update:
- St. Paddy’s Day Plans
- Earthquakes return
- One year of COVID

CORONAVIRUS
One Year Later
3/11/2020 was declared the start of the pandemic. A little over a year later, let’s take a look at the overall numbers for Sedgwick County (as of 3/12).
- Total cases: 45,231
- Total tested: 472,255
- Total deaths: 556
Phase 2 is Wide Open
Sedgwick County announced last Tuesday that all residents listed on the Phase 2 of Sedgwick County plan can now schedule vaccination appointments. Phase 2 includes 2A, 2B, and 2C which consists of postal workers, clergy, higher education, food service workers and much more.
Click HERE to schedule your vaccination appointment.
Where can you get vaccinated?
The following locations provided by the county are open:
- 223 S. Main | Former Wichita Central Library | Mondays through Saturdays
- 7001 W. 21st St. | K-State Research & Extension / Sedgwick County Extension Center
There are also several pharmacies around town that are offering vaccinations.
Hospital Restrictions
Ascension Via Christi has lightened up on the visitor restrictions. As of Thursday, they will allow patients (that are not under contact precautions) to have two visitors in the facility at a time between 8AM-8PM. This is at St. Francis, St. Joseph, and St. Teresa as well as the Ascension Via Christi Rehab Hospital.
POWERED BY VISIT WICHITA
Visit Wichita is responsible for bring thousand of people to Wichita to experience the awesome cultural attractions, events, shopping, and dining.
They helped secure the 2021 ACL Cornhole Mania tournament this weekend at WSU’s Charles Koch Arena! 2000 person attendance limit with a minimum payout of $40,000!
They also send out periodic newsletters with information about Wichita.
EARTHQUAKE
Wakey, Wakey eggs and quakey
If you didn’t wake up to the earthquakes yesterday, you must have still been hibernating for winter. Most of Wichita (at least the east side) felt several earthquakes to start of the day yesterday around 6:30AM. As if we didn’t need the sleep following the time spring forward.
Quick run down of each earthquake from yesterday:
- 3.4 Magnitude at 6:29AM
- 3.5 Magnitude at 6:31AM
- 3.0 Magnitude at 7:00AM
- 3.9 Magnitude at 6:08PM
We did a semi-deep dive on earthquakes in wichita a couple months ago.
WEATHER
Winter Weather Electric Bills
Wichita is served by Evergy for it’s energy needs. Due to Evergy’s Kansas Central Division needing to spend an additional $100 million during the freezing weather to buy power, this cost will get passed onto the customers. Keep an eye on your energy bills.
CIVIC
Public Library
Starting last Monday, many Wichita public library locations reopened for a new “grab and go” model where you can browse shelves and use public computers. The libraries have been drive-up only since November.

WSU Mens Basketball (16-5) :
Wichita State won the first round of the AAC tournament before losing by 1 to Cincinnati Saturday.
Yesterday left many Shocker fans extremely anxious as they tuned into Selection Sunday to see if we made the NCAA tournament. Much to the excitement of WSU, we are going dancing! We will start off with a play in game against Drake (we get to beat up on them like the good ole days!) If things work out, we could play KU in a few rounds and we all know how that ended last time…
ICT Extra:
St. Paddy’s
Here is a list of St. Patrick’s Day festive events this week!

White Castle
Although we no longer have one here at home, White Castle was born in Wichita 100 years ago.
Alligator discovered in a Kansas river
There was an alligator carcass discovered in a Kansas river. It is thought to be a pet, not wild.
