Good morning Wichita!
I hope you all stayed warm this weekend and your pipes didn’t freeze. In my 20 years in Wichita, I have never seen it this cold, but luckily there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Next Monday will be 48 degrees. I’ve never been so happy to see 48 degrees.
In today’s Wichita Weekly Update:
- Record Cold
- Vaccine Updates
- Largest Midwest Urban Rooftop Farm
Let’s get it!
– Landon
Record Colds
If it feels like this is the coldest you have ever felt Wichita for this long (or at least in a long time), you are correct. This is the longest stretch of sub-freezing days in this part of Kansas since December of 1983.Typically the day time highs are in the mid-40s this time of year.

Avoid Frozen Ponds
Regardless of record colds, it is important to remember that ponds and lakes are extremely dangerous this time of year. Some may be thick enough to walk/skate on, but many are NOT. There were several cases last week where kids and a few adults fell in. Please be careful.
Wichita High School North
The Wichita Board of Education has voted to discontinue the ‘Redskin’ as the mascot for North High. The removal and replacement of this mascot will take place over the next two years. This follows the Washington Football Team (NFL) changing their mascot from Redskins this past year as well as Shawnee Mission (Kansas) voting to ditch Braves or Indians as mascots.
Wichita Tragedy
In a tragic incident, Brianna Ibarra lost her life. While Brianna (aged 13) waited in the car for her family, a man stole the vehicle. As Brianna tried to escape the vehicle, she got caught in the seatbelt and was dragged by the vehicle. There is a gofundme to raise money for her family.
Walmart Vaccine
Several Walmarts will be administering the COVID-19 Vaccine. None of these are in Sedgwick County at this point. The closest stores are in El Dorado, Ark City, or Winfield.
Teacher Vaccines
USD259 Teachers and staff are now eligible(as of Saturday) to receive their doses of the COVID-19 Vaccine.
Wichita Eagle wins Lawsuit vs Wichita Police
After 38 months in a legal battle, the Eagle has won a case regarding body-cam footage. It was determined that the WPD cannot use the state’s open records law to block the release of the footage to the Eagle. This follows a couple high-profile cases from a few years back.
New Car Park, Rooftop Urban Farm
If you have been downtown Wichita lately, you have noticed the Fidelity name. They have a new five-story “car park”. The ground level of this building will have a new 4000 square foot restaurant. It will also be home to the largest rooftop urban farm in the Midwest.

Food
Our recommendation this week is District Taqueria. They have some controversial queso, but we personally love it!
