Good morning Wichita! Hope everyone survived the (too many to count) earthquakes in the last week.
If it makes you feel any better, only 16 days left in 2020 and we don’t have anywhere to go but up…right?
On a lighter note –
Happy Hanukkah!

@WindSurgeICT |
The Wichita Wind Surge officially becomes the Double-A affiliate for the Minnesota Twins. I know how disappointed everyone was with how 2020 ruined the inaugural season for the Wind Surge. AND then everyone was disappointed when we heard we would no longer be the Triple A team for the Marlins. But I am just happy we will still be getting some professional baseball in arguably the nicest stadium in the minor leagues. The only potential downside is rooting for players who will be playing against our KC Royals.
Earthquakes Shake Wichita
If you have been in Wichita in the last couple weeks, odds are you felt one or more of the earthquakes. This seems unusual for most people. Growing up around here, I don’t really remember ever feeling earthquakes, let alone multiple in a couple weeks. I believe the count is up to 9ish since Thanksgiving. It’s very interesting to me where all of the epicenters are located as you can see in the graphic below:
Earthquakes in Wichita (KWCH 12) |
The specific cause isn’t known, but Wichita does lie right along the Humboldt fault zone.
Make sure you check your homes for any damage from these earthquakes!
Latest COVID Health Order
Here are some of the highlights from Dr. Minns latest order which will last until January 9th:
- For indoor single-court or single-playing area rooms and outdoor facilities, there can be a maximum of two attendees per participant. All persons must exit the area once the event is over.
- For indoor multi-court or multi-playing area rooms, there can be a maximum of two attendees per participant. All persons must exit the area once the event is over.
- The facility hosting any youth or adult recreational organized sports is responsible for ensuring that no players or spectators on different courts or playing areas are within 6 feet of one another.
- Event venues will be treated like bars, restaurants, and night clubs. They may hold 100 people OR 50% of fire code capacity, whichever is LESS.
Bar Owners Fight Back
Over a dozen bar owners in Wichita filed a lawsuit challenging the COVID-19 health order. If they are successful, it would mean no mask requirements, curfews or gathering limits before the typical 2am closing time.
Some of the businesses involved include Blu Nightclub, Club Indigo, Vorshay’s Cocktail Lounge, The Cowboy Inn, Party Express, The Stop, The Rusty Nail, Augustino Brewing Co., A & J’s Music Room Bar & Grill, and Revolution Lounge
Rest in Peace
Rest in peace to one half of the original Pizza Hut duo. Frank Carney passed away on December 2nd, he was 82 years old.
Wichita Crimecast
The Wichita Police Department (WPD) wants to reach a larger audience, specifically online. They just started a videostreamed Crimecast (podcast + vlog). This will be used to better educate the community on crime trends with hot spot maps and crime prevention tips. This will be updated weekly.
Did you know…that Joyland wasn’t the first amusement park in Wichita? That right actually belongs to Wonderland Park that was on “Ackerman” Island.
This photo comes from Historic Preservation Alliance. It was originally part of a postcard book called “Peerless Princess of the Plains.” |
