With the 2020 Olympics almost here, we looked back to see some athletes with ties to Kansas who participated in 2016.
Nico Hernandez
Nico Hernandez is a boxer from Wichita. He represented team USA in the light flyweight division in Rio and received a bronze medal.
Miles Ukaoma
Miles Ukaoma of Wichita represented Nigeria in the 400 meter hurdles. Ukaoma had previously won two state championships for Maize High School. He did not medal.
Florian Skilang Temengil
Freestyle wrestler Florian Skilang Temengil. who has wrestled for Newman University, represented Palau in the heavyweight division. He did not medal.
Tyson Gay
After a fifth-place finish in the trials, 33-year-old Gay represented the United States as a member of the 400 meter relay team. The track and field athlete competed for Barton Community college. He did not medal.
Veronica Campbell Brown
Veronica Campbell Brown represented Jamaica in the 200 meter. Brown, had competed for Barton Community College. She won the silver medal.
Antanas Kavaliauskas
Kavaliauskas, a former Barton Community College athlete, went on to play professional basketball in Lithuania. He represented the country in the 2016 Olympics, but did not medal.
Erik Kynard
Erik Kynard had previously been a member of the Kansas State University track and field team. He did not medal in the 2016 high jump.
Balazs Baji
Baji had competed for K-State. Representing Hungary in the 2016 games, Baji competed in the 110 hurdles at the Olympics. He did not medal.
Akela Jones
Jones competed in two events in Rio, representing Barbados in both high jump and the heptathalon. She won NCAA titles for both of these events while competing at Kansas State University, but she did not medal in Rio.
Jeffrey Julmis
The Fort Lauderdale, Florida native has competed on the track and field team at Kansas State University, and represented Haiti in the 110 hurdles in 2016. He did not medal.
Shadae Lawrence
Lawrence, a track and field athlete who has competed for Kansas State University, represented Jamaica at Rio in the discus throw. She did not medal.
Beverly Ramos
Ramos represented Puerto Rico at the games, competing in the marathon. She trained in Manhattan KS as a Wildcat. She did not medal.
Alyx Treasure
Competing for Canada, Treasure was a high jumper, and met the qualifying standard at K-State. However, she did not medal in Rio.
Andre De Grasse
De Grasse competed in three events in Rio, representing Canada in the 100 meter, 200 meter, and the 400 relay. He attended Coffeyville Community College in 2013 and 2014 where he won five NJCAA titles. He won silver in the 200 meter, bronze in the 100 meter and bronze in the 4×100 relay.
Kyle Clemmons
Kyle Clemons competed for the University of Kansas from 2009 to 2013. He competed in the 1600 meter relay. The relay won the gold medal.
Mason Finley
A former discus and shot put competitor for KU, Finley competed after placing first in discus at the Olympic trials. He competed in the discus and shot put in Rio, but did not medal.
Andrea Geubelle
Geubelle competed in both the triple jump and long jump at the University of Kansas. She finished third in the Olympic trials for triple jump, qualifying to compete in Rio. She did not medal.
Daina Levy
Daina Levy is a former KU athlete. The hammer thrower represented Jamaica in the games. She did not medal.
Liana Salazar
Salazar was a member of the KU soccer team, and competed for Columbia in Rio. She did not medal.
Zainab Sanni
Sanni, who competed at the University of Kansas, will compete for Nigeria in the 400 meter relay team. She did not medal.
Ingrid Vidal
Vidal is a former KU soccer player. She competed for Columbia alongside Salazar. She did not medal.
Lydia Paterson
Paterson, of Kansas City, Kansas, competed in the 10-meter air pistol competition in the 2016 summer games. She did not medal.
Jack Sock
Ranked one of the top 25 men’s tennis players in the world, Jack Sock of Kansas City, Kansas competed in Rio. He won a bronze medal.
Amy Cragg
Amy Cragg of Leavenworth, Kansas returned to the Olympics in 2016 after running the 10,000 meter in 2012. She competed in the women’s marathon in Rio, but did not medal.
Antwon Hicks
Antwon Hicks represented Nigeria in the110 meter hurdles in the Rio de Janeiro games. He did not medal.
