Welcome everyone to this week’s Wichita Weekly Update where I give you a rundown of the recent local news, some fun facts about Wichita and upcoming events over the next week. Today is Tuesday, September 29th.

50th Anniversary of Wichita State University football team plane crash

On friday, October 2, 1970 at 1:14PM, an airplane carrying 37 passengers and 3 crew members crashed. 29 people were killed at the scene and two later died of injuries. This was one of two aircrafts carrying the WSU football team to Utah for a game against Utah State. The official report leading up to the crash indicated poor inflight decisions an inadequate pre-flight planning.

Century II Update

As we mentioned in a past episode, a Sedgwick County Judge struck down the petition of over 17000 signatures to Save Century II. A citizens group has filed an appeal against this decision. They have retained Wichita attorney Austin Park and are asking for donations to help cover the costs while an anonymous donor has stepped up to offer matching funds. This group is pushing for a public vote regarding the fate of Century II.

Wichita Sisters create app to help skilled labor hiring

Deborah Gladney and Angela Muhwezi-Hall created an app called QuickHire to help connect employeers and job seekers in traditional blue-collar industries and trades. So if you or anyone you know is looking for a job, check out the QuickHire app.

Wichita State University President Jay Golden Resigns

Jay Golden has resigned as the president of Wichita State University. Just last year, the search for Dr. Golden lasted several months and cost about $100,000. There are very few details about this resignation at this time.

Wichita Heights Football team helps after a wreck

Smart Factory coming to Wichita State

A collaboration between WSU and Deloitte announced The Smart Factory at Wichita is coming. It will be an immersive experiential learning environment to help accelerate the future of innovation, manufacturing and new tech.
