Why is Wichita called the ICT?
Wichita has a lot of nicknames: the 316, Ta-Town, Doo-Dah (this will have to be an article of it’s own), the Air-Capital of the world, ICT, and many more (including several that aren’t family friendly, but very entertaining).
Wichita, KS – The ICT
ICT is a reference to the airport code for Wichita’s Mid-Continent Airport aka the Wichita Dwight D Eisenhower National Airport. Although this is common knowledge to some, I wondered why there isn’t a W in the airport code. Every airport has an abbreviated code for it’s name. When the Wichita airport was assigned a code, the FCCS did not allow airport codes to start with the letters ‘K’ or ‘W’. So that get’s us down to ‘Ichita’. Typical naming conventions called for the second letter of the city to begin the code followed by any phonetics that make it recognizable. From there, it was decided to use ‘I’,’C’ and then skip to the letter ‘T’ to complete the infamous ICT moniker that so many beloved Wichitans use for their city.
