With 3 kids under 5, date nights can be hard to come by if you don’t plan them and make them a priority (one of our 2025 goals).
Sur La Table (pronounced Sir la tob, not sur lay tab-lay, or sir la table) makes it extremely easy to plan a fun, unique, and dare I say delicious date night.
Last weekend we headed over to Bradley Fair to learn how to make Chinese takeout.
When I say this was one of our favorite dates in a while, I mean it.
What to Expect

There are only 8 people to a class, so the teacher (shout out Julian) gives you as much attention as you need and they walk you through step by step from general cooking advice to specifics like how to cut an onion or pepper more effectively.
The class itself was about 2 hours and that was the perfect amount of time.

You can be as hands on or as hands off as you’d like.
Everyone starts off with a cutting board, but some people had different responsibilities than others (like one dices an onion while one cuts into slices).
It’s great. You just show up and everything is there and ready for you to go to school with your professional cooking instructor.
You cut, you slice, you sauté, you do it all.
Or none of it, if that’s more of your style. That’s the best part, you can be as involved or not involved as you want.

The teacher showed us the ideal way to cut peppers, onions, garlic, ginger, and more all while also showing how to keep all of ourdigits.
Cooking Class Options

There are a wide selection of date, time, and types of food to choose from. We did ours at 1PM on a Sunday.
Just taking a quick glance at the website, some of the other options are:
- French Bistro Favorites
- Date Night: Dinner in Tuscany
- Perfecting French Pastries
- Date Night: Evening in Paris
- Citrus Lovers’ Macarons
We did the Chinese Favorites where we made Fried Rice, Sesame Chicken, some sort of noodles and almond cookies.

I also have to commend Sur La Table. My wife has an allergy and they tweaked the recipe to allow her to participate without sacrificing the quality of the recipe or making her feel weird about it.
This class was fun, we made some friends, and learned some new skills.

Oh, and you get to eat it all afterwards.

10/10 couldn’t recommend the cooking classes at Sur La Table more.
