One of the most iconic attractions of Wichita is the Keeper of the Plains.
The Keeper of the Plains, or “The Keeper” to many locals, is a 44 foot tall sculpture by Blackbear Bosin. Blackbear Bosin was a Comanche-Kiowa Sculptor who passed in 1980. He moved to Wichita in 1940. After serving in the United States Marine Corps and serving in World War II he worked as an artist.
The Keeper of the Plains is Blackbear Bosin’s most famous work and was erected in 1974 ath the confluence of the Little Arkansas and Arkansas rivers. The iconic Wichita shape is of a Native American Warrior offering a blessing to the sky. You can find this icon all over Wichita.
Located on the river, this is one of the best places to catch the beautiful Kansas sunset in Wichita. You can find the Keeper of the Plains next to the Mid-America All-Indian Center.
The Keeper is surrounded by the “Rings of Fire” which are firepits that are lit at 15-minute increments once a night around 7pm during the winter and sunset during the summer.
This is a must see attraction if you live in Wichita or are visiting Wichita.
The Keeper has inspired many colorful and artistic ‘Keepers’ to pop up around Wichita. This colorful Keeper can be found on the north side of College HIll Park.
