The Envision Arts Gallery is excited to partner with Dr. Rachel Epp Buller and Great Plains Nature Center to bring Winter Walking to downtown Wichita, opening First Friday, January 3rd.
Buller created Winter Walking in the winter of 2022 while she was a Fulbright Scholar in Edmonton, Alberta. According to the artist: “Winter Walking is an artistic performance related to a four-month daily walking practice I embarked on while experiencing winter in Canada. The piece is a response to my attempt at multispecies listening, combining the sounds of snow, ice, footsteps, magpies, coyotes, and other beings and writers with whom I was in listening conversation. …There is an urgency to listening in this time. If we can find ways to listen more, listen better, listen with our whole bodies, to inhabit a listening orientation, we might fundamentally shift our human and more-than-human relations and reach together toward more sustainable futures.”
The project was organized and curated by Ksenya Gurshtein, an independent curator and art historian based in Wichita. “With this project,” says Gurshtein, “I was excited to find a new way in which contemporary art can reach new and broader audiences. Art should be readily accessible to everyone, and one way to make it more available is to bring it to places outside the walls of institutions that traditionally house it. I hope this project allows people to experience an encounter with contemporary art that is deeply moving and that this project contributes positively to the quality of life in Wichita.”
The Envision Arts Gallery will bring the sights and sounds of Winter Walking to downtown Wichita, along with art activities inspired by the exhibition.
