Tennessee-born trombonist Matt Hall discovered his passion for jazz at an early age, initially inspired by the sound of the trombone and mentors like Rick Simerly. By high school, he led his own jazz quintet, The 2nd Floor Katz, recording two albums and performing regularly. An active member of Milligan College Jazz Ensemble and the Knoxville Youth Jazz Orchestra, Hall credits his early ensemble experiences for nurturing his talent and shaping his musical journey.
In 2011, Hall joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a trombonist, where he performed across the U.S. as part of the US Marine Corps Jazz All-Star Band, with memorable performances at venues like Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival. After his service, he studied jazz at SUNY Purchase College-Conservatory of Music in NYC, where he performed alongside jazz greats such as Ingrid Jensen, Gary Smulyan, and Slide Hampton.
Upon returning to Southern California, Hall joined the KSDS Jazz Orchestra and the Jazz Garden Big Band, frequently performing with his brother, Charlie Arbelaez. In 2020, Hall released his debut album, I Hope to My Never, a collection of original works that reflect his experiences. Now a key figure in the Southern California jazz scene and co-leader of the San Diego Jazz Orchestra, Hall continues to expand his musical influence with his powerful performances and dedication to jazz.
