In the late nineteen hundreds, five seasoned musicians serendipitously found themselves swapping licks and shared tunes under a tarp in the fabled Walnut Grove in Winfield, Kansas. It was there, at the Walnut Valley Festival that Big Twang was born.
They made only one acclaimed recording, but for a short time toured nationally and cinched 1999 Rockygrass Band Contest.
A quarter century later, three of the original members – Robin Macy, Kentucky White, and Darren Wilcox, flanked by fiddling virtuoso, Shelby Eicher—make up the current iteration and call themselves Little Big Twang.
No stranger to the Winfield grandstand, each member has performed, many times and many places in different configurations:
Darren Wilcox (singer/songwriter and bassist) with Special Consensus.
Kentucky White (guitarist and notably the current IBMA Executive Director) with New Tradition and Driven.
Shelby Eicher (National Fiddler Hall of Fame and Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame) with Mischievous Swing and The Tulsa Playboys.
Robin Macy (singer/songwriter and guitarist) with various girl groups, some more famous than others.
Through the years Macy has continued to hone her songwriting skill set, inspired by the Kansas heartland and her ongoing work at the historic Bartlett Arboretum, the century-old bountiful patch of nature she calls home with guitar-slinger husband, Kentucky White. Their roots music harkens back to an earlier time with anthems that celebrate the Agrarian life and pay homage to the Good Earth.
