Good morning Wichita!

The weather lately has been incredible. How have you been spending your time outdoors lately? Lots of news this week!

In today’s Wichita Weekly Update:

Let’s get it!

CORONAVIRUS

Headed in the right direction

In this past Friday’s Kansas Dept. of Health and Environment report, there were no deaths reported from COVID-19. This is the first time no deaths have been reported in 3 straight reports since mid-July in Sedgwick County. Not only have deaths been dropping, but the number of new cases and hospitalizations are down as well. Let’s keep heading in the right direction!

RIVERFEST

Riverfest is BACK!

Riverfest will officially be back in 2021, it will just look a little different. It will be split into two parts. The first part will be the traditional June weekend (June 4-6) and will include events like the River run, river races, triathalon, softball tournaments and plein air-painting festival.

The second portion will take place in the fall from Sept 30 – Oct 3 and should look a little more normal (we hope). This will include the food courts, fireworks, concerts, and kid events. Buttons will go on sale in August.

CIVIL

One Large Leap for Wichita

We often compare Wichita to other cities, especially mid-western cities. The Milken Institute research company does the same. It looks at 200 metro areas with 300k+ people and compares jobs, wages, high-tech growth, and living affordability.

Based on these criteria, Wichita made the largest leap in Best Performing Cities Index moving up 86 places to #64.

Save Century II

KSN

The group Save Century II pitched their case before the House Local Government Committee to try to get the state involved in saving ye ole spaceship. Their goal was initiation a binding public election before a final decision is made with the building.

Despite 17000 petition signatures in favor of their election, they lost this bid at the state.

In summary, there will be an advisory election to see where Wichita stands before the City Council will help make a final decision.

Wichita Pools Open this Summer

GIPHY

COVID-19 took a lot away from us last year, including local splash pads and pools. 2021 is a new year and most of these will be up and running by Memorial Day.

FOOD AND DRINK

Curbside Cocktails

A bill passed last Monday to permanently allow curbside cocktail pick up. This was a temporary rule during 2020 due to COVID to help businesses.

Andy’s in College Hill

In the hottest debate since Century II, Andy’s Frozen Custard has plans to open a shop in College Hill where Dempsey’s Biscuit Co used to be.

A Wichita Couple (and a lot of neighbors) are against this idea because they feel it doesn’t fit the vibe and feel of College Hill.

UFO

UFO in Wichita?

There were reports last week of a UFO over the streets of Wichita. And technically it was a “UFO” for most people as it was an unidentified flying object.

It turns out it was NASA’s “Super Guppy” aircraft departing from McConnell Air Force Base.

BUSINESS

QuickHire Grows

QuickHire is an exciting new start up in Wichita that helps connect jobs to individuals. They recently just raised more money via an angel investor and made their first hire.
