Good morning Wichita! We hope you all had a great Christmas and great start of Kwanzaa! We are so close to 2021 I can smell it. Or more importantly, we’re just days away from being OUT of 2020.

In today’s Wichita Weekly Update:

  • Update on natural disasters
  • Bank robbery in Wichita
  • New Year’s Eve Plans

One last thing before we get into it, if you do go out on New Year’s Eve, stay safe. One for COVID reasons and two, please don’t drink and drive. Enjoy your evening, but stay off the roads if you’re going to drink. Call an uber or call a friend.

Let’s get it!

COVID Update

The numbers continue to increase daily. An article from last week dated 12/21 stated that ICU numbers in Sedgwick county continue to increase. All ~208 beds have been full since the start of November.

If you haven’t seen it, the Sedgwick County Coronavirus Disease dashboard is a great resource to stay up to date. The most recent positive test rate has jumped back up to 21% (as of Sunday evening).

Earthquake Update

I had a great line about there being no earthquakes in at least a few days in Wichita, only to wake up at 4:20AM this morning to another small one… In the wake of more than a dozen earthquakes that took place after Thanksgiving, including a 3.7 magnitude, people have been wondering what is causing all of these earthquakes. For reference, damage from earthquakes typically starts around the 4.0 level.

The Kansas Corporation Commission (KCC) completed an investigation and concluded that these earthquakes are not caused by oil and gas activities. I will continue to update as we hear more.

Tornado Alley

While we’re talking about natural disasters, let’s talk about tornados. We have felt many more earthquakes than normal, BUT the number of twisters has declined significantly.

According to Kansas Mesonet (@ksmesonet), since 1991, Kansas has had 95 tornados per year, but this year we have only had 17. I guess that’s one way that 2020 decided to spare us.

Old Fashioned Bank Robbery

Around 3:40PM last Monday, the Golden Plains Credit Union at 9555 East Corporate Hills Drive was robbed. The 50 year old suspect is said to have entered the bank, walked behind the counter and demanded money. He did not show a weapon, but the employees feared for their lives nevertheless.

After the suspect took off in a stolen Tundra, a short car chase stopped when he struck a car stopped at a stoplight. After refusing to get out of the car and continuing to endanger others, a police officer shot, struck, and ultimately killed the suspect. This isn’t the first time the suspect has been convicted of robbing a bank.

New Culinary School

WSU Tech has said that they will be opening a new culinary arts and hospitality management school in Downtown Wichita. They say it will be a state-of-the-art facility and will bring much needed diversification to Wichita.

New Wichita Game and Hobby Shop

Southeast HS teacher Jonathan Schweer has opened the Pink Elephant Games and Hobby shop at 5120E. Central. He plans to use examples from his business as lessons for his class while also bringing his love for games to provide value to Wichita.

Wichita Life Recommendations:

Restaurant

Our recommendation this week is Meddy’s. Wichita is blessed with a lot of great mediterrean restaurants, but you would be hard pressed to find one as quick and high quality as Meddy’s. There are locations all over Wichita. Check them out on a night with live music!

Instagram

This week’s instagram recommendation is Sufian Damaj. Sufian is one of the most talented photographers we have in Wichita, as you can no doubt see below:

“The Neighborhood” via Wichita By E.B. is back with another recommendation, this time it is for their (and our) favorite soup in town:
